Compiled by Margaret Cropper, an English kindergarten superintendent, Hymns and songs for the church kindergarten is especially designed for children of preschool age or just starting on school life. Cropper’s intention was to compile a hymnal “so simple that a little child from the simplest home can sing it and understand it.” It comprises both traditional and specially-composed hymns, utilising words within the range of a young child’s vocabulary.

Songs for early childhood at church and home. Illustrated by Ann Eshner. Philadelphia: Westminster Press, 1958.

This American hymnal was compiled by professional educators and intended for preschool children. The songs were selected to reflect the sensory experiences which are important to young children – sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. The collection also emphasises the relationships which are of basic importance to a young child – to God, family, church, and the community. Certain familiar tunes and texts are slightly altered for the ease of singing and understanding of young children.
